If you want to know more about a great free community event, Stoughton in the Great War, taking place later this year, go along to Emmanuel Church on Tuesday, April 15, at 7.30pm.

Stoughton in the Great War, is taking place on the green at Cardwells Keep, off Stoughton Road, on Sunday afternoon September 21. The barracks was once the home of the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment and with 2014 being the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, this event will commemorate that as well as focusing on the regiment and its close links with Stoughton.

Stoughton WWI A4 02There will be something for all ages including displays and exhibitions of vintage photos courtesy of leading local historian David Rose, activities and competitions for children, music from the Great War era, what food was eaten back then and what people grew, representatives from the Surrey Infantry Museum based at Clandon Park, plus more. There will also be refreshments and the afternoon will conclude with everyone being invited to march behind a band to Stoke Cemetery in Stoughton Road for a short service of remembrance at the war memorial cross.

To make the event a success, volunteers are needed to help out in arranging the event and most of all on the day. Why not get involved and be part of this community commemoration! The event is being organised by Cllr Pauline Searle, Sheila Willis and David Rose. They want people from not only Stoughton, but Stoke, Westborough and other parts of Guildford to take part.

The meeting is being held at Emmanuel Church, Shepherds Lane, Stoughton, on Tuesday, April 15, at 7.30pm. Go along to hear more or offer to lend your help. In the meantime, more details from Pauline on 01483 825424.
