Guildford Borough Council has announced that a number of its regular services were affected today (Friday, January 18), due to the snow.
In a statement, the council said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their patience and understanding. Residents can find the latest updates and advice on our services on our website and our social media accounts.
“We will continue to review the situation and hope to offer all of our services as soon as conditions improve. For up-to-date information residents are asked to visit www.guildford.gov.uk/snow or contact us on 01483 505050 during working hours. We will also post information on Twitter (@GuildfordBC) and Facebook.”
Day Centres
Borough council day centres have been open for any customers travelling independently to them.
The council contacted customers to advise them of the situation and to check if they needed any extra help. It urges residents to look out for elderly neighbours in their local community during the current cold weather.
Meals on Wheels
The council delivered extra emergency meals to all its service users on Thursday. It also ran two lunch clubs on Friday. It aims to deliver hot meals on Saturday, January 19. If it is unable to do so, it will contact all its customers to check on their welfare and advise how to heat their emergency meals.
Community Transport
The community transport service was suspended due to poor road conditions.
Refuse and recycling collections
The council completed the majority of it collections on Friday, but admits there were icy and difficult conditions in some residential areas and side roads. A spokesman said: “We are sorry that we were unable to collect in some areas; our priority must be the safety of our staff and residents.
“Please leave your waste or recycling out for collection. We aim to collect as early as possible next week, depending on the weather conditions. We will post regular updates on our website.”
Street cleaning
Street cleaning services were suspended at noon on Friday. Crews will be helping Surrey County Council grit the town centre over the weekend.
Car parks
Motorists coming to Guildford are advised to use either the multi-storey or underground car park at Castle, Tunsgate, York Road or Farnham Road. Although the surface car parks have been gritted, conditions may deteriorate. Bright Hill, Commercial Road and Millbrook car parks are closed.
Parks
The Castle Grounds and Stoke Park Gardens are closed this weekend to help protect the grounds. Staff helped grit a number of sheltered housing schemes to keep residents safe.
All pitch bookings for the weekend have been cancelled.
Playrangers
Playrangers sessions scheduled for Friday afternoon were cancelled.
