Covid Update: Has the Third Wave Peaked?

Pandemic watchers will be hoping that this week’s sharp decline in new Covid infections in Guildford and across Surrey is a sign that the third wave of infection has peaked.

Within the borough, only Onslow Village and Park Barn saw increased numbers.

Hospital admissions associated with the latest wave have continued to increase due to the normal lag time between infection and admission but this has not translated into another peak in Covid associated deaths. The numbers in Guildford have remained very low and there is only one additional death reported this week, showing the efficacy of the vaccination programme.

The rate of vaccination though continues to be much lower than it was a few months ago and the lowest it has been in the period of the programme. A possible contributing factor is that the last few per cent of those left unvaccinated will include those who do not wish to receive it.
