Esme Campbell

By Esme Campbell

I have been reporting for The Guildford Dragon NEWS since December, and I have loved every second of it.

Having graduated from the University of Manchester where I studied Politics, and armed with practical journalism experience for my student newspaper and local publications the Elmbridge Magazine and the Windsor Magazine I was very pleased that The Dragon welcomed me to its team so I could expand my journalism skills.

Between Guildford’s rich history, vibrant residents and their busy lives, I’ve had the pleasure of reporting on the ins and outs of the borough’s goings-on, from education and the environment to charity events and local businesses, encouraging people to engage with and stay connected to their community in the face of an ever-growing individualistic society.

Local journalism is disappearing in the UK, but The Dragon remains a pillar of what it stands for: Guildford news, for Guildford people by Guildford reporters. It prioritises the stories and voices that aren’t often heard and provides a much-needed channel for current affairs outside of the big cities.

While The Dragon is no stranger to breaking news and strong headlines, it also reinforces that no story is too small to be told. Small stories don’t mean unimportant ones, and often, it’s the small stories that can make big waves in a local community.

For many in the borough, Guildford is where they spend their days. For those who live and work here, who pass most of their time here, The Dragon addresses the issues that concern this community and keep Guildford from becoming one of the UK’s “news deserts”.

I really enjoy getting out and about to talk to Guildford residents about their views and opinions, getting a sense of what’s important to this locality and what makes it tick. Writing for a community has really made me appreciate the impact journalism can have in bringing people together. Its power in strengthening local democracy and connectivity is invaluable.

Working for The Dragon has already taught me so much. Becoming a local reporter has not only strengthened my journalism skills, but also deepened my appreciation for it beyond what I could have imagined. And most importantly, it’s given me a chance to make a difference; to use journalism as a force for good and create a positive impact.

Journalism has had such a profound impression on me and my life, and I hope to inform and inspire Guildford as much as the place and its people have inspired me.

While I complete my studies for an NCTJ qualification, my Dragon experience can only help me grow.

It’s a very interesting point in human history to be starting a career as a journalist! Whatever happens during the next half-century in which Esme will practise her profession, it’s guaranteed not to be boring.

The “optimistic variant” (to use a Russian expression) will see us make dramatic strides forward in genetics, with a great likelihood of making the word “cancer” like the word “polio” — of historic interest only. We may even find a way to give our descendants genes which will provide them with stellar IQ’s and other desirable characteristics. And who knows where AI will take us?

Esme may even find herself reporting from our colony on the Moon, or even further away.

And for a real leap in technology – they may even invent a road-surfacing material that doesn’t develop potholes after a few months!

If we can just avoid a big, stupid war…
