Events Celebrating 150th Anniversary of St Nicolas Parish Church

St Nicolas’ Parish Church in Bury Street, Guildford is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the present building, the third on the site.

It has a series of monthly public events marks this occasion.

Tuesday, January 13, 7:30pm: Lecture: Dr Catherine Ferguson FSA. The long history of St Nicolas: three churches and one parish.

Tuesday, February 3, 7.30pm: Lecture: Dr Catherine Ferguson FSA. The Loseley Chapel and its occupants.

Tuesday, March 10, 7.3opm: Lecture: Canon Jeremy Haselock FSA. The theology of the Oxford Movement and its influence on church architecture.

Holy Week and Easter: St Nicolas Church will be joined by the Right Reverend Peter Hancock.

Thursday, May 7, 7.30pm: Lecture: Dr Michael Shapland, senior archaeologist, University College, London. The Hill of the Dragon: A medieval wayside shrine and regional assembly site by St Catherine’s Chapel.

Thursday, June 4, 8pm: Corpus Christi Mass, preacher, Fr Victor Stock, former Dean of Guildford Cathedral.

Saturday, June 20: Midsummer dinner with comedian Paul Kerensa.

Tuesday, September 8, 7.3opm: Lecture: Charles O’Brien FSA. “The Ugliest Church in Surrey?” – a reassessment of St Nicolas’ band its Victorian designers.

Sunday, October 4: Dedication Festival Mass and Lunch – preacher, the Bishop of Guildford, the Rt Rev Andrew Watkins.

Tuesday, November 10, 7.30pm: Lecture: Canon Nicholas Thistlethwaite – Victorian church music.

All lectures are free, donations welcome.

They will all be accompanied by a cash bar including a St Nicolas gin, specially blended for the anniversary.
