Guildford Flames broke up a 1-1 tie in the third period with five straight goals against no reply, including three across 76 seconds to close out a Scottish doubleheader 4-point sweep on the back of a 6-1 win at Fife Flyers.

24 hours earlier, including an empty netter in the final seconds, they scored three unanswered in the third period with Tyler Busch netting the winner in the last three minutes to secure a 4-2 win on the road at Glasgow Clan on Friday night.

In the opener, Clan skated through the opening frame with a 13-8 shot advantage, but Justin Fazio turned away all 13 while Liam Soulière was also perfect on the eight he faced during a scoreless set.

The game’s opener was scored off the stick of Ethan Strang at 25:26, but Clan ended the period with a lead thanks to Robert Lachowicz at 32:27 and Rylan Schwartz inside the final 4 minutes.

With the third period over halfway through, Flames were still a goal off the pace until Mathieu Gosselin levelled at 52:54 ahead of Busch’s decider and Jamal Watson’s insurance on an unguarded net.

Fazio recorded 33 saves on 35 shots while Soulière finished with 26 saves on 29 attempts.

At Kirkaldy, home of the Fife Flyers, the first period ticked away with no scoring thanks to 15 stops by Flyers’ Christian Purboo, while Justin Fazio for Flames had no blemishes on 13.

Early in the second, Flames found themselves on a 5 on 3 powerplay. They didn’t convert but shortly after Flyers returned a fourth skater to the ice, the visitors bagged a man advantage goal off the stick of Matt Alvaro. However, with just five seconds left in the frame, Johan Porsberger ensured the teams would be all square at a goal each through 40 minutes.

The ice was still wet when Flames re-stored their slim margin thanks to Mathieu Gosselin with what turned out to be the winner.  The late burst began with Jake Coughler who added insurance at 51:53.

Less than a minute later, Jonathan Racine’s first with the Flames preceded by just 18 seconds a Lewis Hook strike to put the game out of reach.  Tyler Busch closed the scoresheet when he tapped one in on a 56th minute powerplay.

Fazio turned away 29 of 30 shots while Purboo was 36 of 42.

“We can’t ask for more than that from he guys to bring home all 4 points on what are challenging trips North of the border,” said coach Paul Dixon. “It is a great outcome from a challenging schedule section and now we look forward to an opportunity to play at home next weekend.”
