Making Godstone High Street Safe to Reopen

As work continues following the collapse on Godstone High Street, we want to share a clear update on how things are progressing and what to expect next.

Progress on site

Our highways team is continuing complex ground stabilisation works beneath the High Street. Investigations have confirmed an extensive underground tunnel network, and to date more than 600 tonnes of grout has been injected 8–10 metres below ground to fill and stabilise the affected mine workings.

This is a highly technical and time-consuming process. Much of the work takes place around three storeys below ground, meaning progress isn’t immediately visible at the surface. To manage this, engineers use a careful “Plan–Do–Review” approach, analysing detailed monitoring data after each phase before deciding next steps. In some areas, multiple treatments have been required to achieve the necessary level of stability, which explains why the work can take time.

The good news is that the process is working, and stabilisation will continue over the coming weeks. Despite the discovery of a larger tunnel network as works progressed, we still expect the road to reopen in the Spring. Safety remains our absolute priority, alongside reopening the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Update from SES

SES continues to work closely with Surrey County Council. Once ground stabilisation is complete, their teams will repair water pipes affected by the collapse. Three pipes run through Godstone High Street: 12”, 8” and 16”. Plans include replacing the damaged 8” pipe, inserting a new pipe within the 16” pipe, and securing the 12” pipe with additional connections to ensure long-term resilience.

SES has been on site since November. While the road was initially expected to reopen by the end of December, additional underground voids meant further treatment was needed. This time has been used to refine plans and reduce future disruption.
