Tycho House, SSTL’s HQ in Guildford

By Stella Kuchanny

Nestled in the heart of Guildford, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) is quietly shaping the future of space exploration. Born from a modest research project at the University of Surrey in 1981, SSTL has become one of the UK’s most remarkable engineering success stories.

My recent visit to their facility offered a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of a company that has transformed the UK’s space industry and continues to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Satellites under construction

A Legacy of Innovation

Starting as an academic experiment, SSTL has launched an impressive 74 satellites, with 10 more currently under construction. The company’s expertise spans missions like JUNO, THEOS-2a, and MICROSAR, touching fields from climate monitoring to lunar exploration. It was humbling to walk through the very floors where these technological marvels are designed and built—reminders of how innovation can flourish in unexpected places.

With over £1.8 billion in turnover, SSTL remains a global player, exporting approximately 80 percent of its services. Yet, its impact isn’t confined to financial metrics. By delivering 21 international satellite missions and training programmes, the company fosters international collaboration, solidifying the UK’s position in the space economy.

Engineers wear protective clothes to ensure no contamination of the satellites.

A Commitment to Education and Community

What sets SSTL apart isn’t just its technological prowess but its human focus. During my visit, I learned about their efforts to nurture talent through global student programmes. Young engineers from around the world come to Guildford to gain hands-on experience, living among locals and contributing to the town’s vibrant community. This exchange is not only enriching for the students but also fosters a unique cultural and professional synergy between Guildford’s residents and the global space industry.

SSTL’s dedication to creating opportunities is underscored by the 2,500 space industry jobs it has helped create since its inception, with 350 people currently employed at its Guildford base. Under the visionary leadership of Sir Martin Sweeting, SSTL has crafted one of the most compelling “career in space” stories, inspiring young engineers to dream beyond Earth’s boundaries.

The Future of Space, Anchored in Guildford

As I left SSTL’s headquarters on Surrey Research Park, it struck me how deeply rooted the company is in Guildford’s identity. SSTL isn’t just a world leader in satellite technology; it’s a symbol of what’s possible when ambition meets community spirit.

For Guildford, having an organisation of SSTL’s calibre is not only a source of pride but also a beacon for the next generation of scientists and engineers, proving that even the sky isn’t the limit.

If you ever find yourself near Tycho House, pause for a moment. Behind its doors, dreams of the future are being crafted today.
