Flames took an early lead but it was their only goal of the evening as Belfast Giants levelled in the second period then got the winner in the third before an insurance empty netter secured a 3-1 win over the Flames on Spectrum ice.
Just after successfully killing a penalty, Flames took a lead with Ethan Strang’s goal at 17:42 that was the only scoring in the frame.
Flames began the new set with a powerplay and a chance to double their lead, but they were unable to do so before Giants returned fire to square it on their own powerplay midway through the game thanks to Gabe Bast.
In the 44th minute, Mike Lee gave Giants their first lead of the evening and a last minute empty netter by David Goodwin as Flames tried to tie it closed the evening.
“We had a good first period,” said coach Paul Dixon, “but we didn’t manage to keep that consistent for later parts in the game where we had some moments but not enough to overcome a very good team who upped their own work rate.”
