A couple of Cardiff Devils 1st period goals put them in a lead they would not hand back across the evening during a 3-1 defeat of the Flames on Spectrum ice.
A little over five minutes in, Ryan Barrow set Devils to a lead. The visitors had a couple of opportunities on the powerplay to extend, but Flames put away the time without any damage until a 17th minute even strength Nolan Yaremko strike sent Devils to break enjoying a 2 goal lead.
Flames were able to test their powerplay in the 2nd, including a stretch of 5 on 3, but were unable to cut into the difference before Yaremko’s 2nd put the visitors up 3 to begin the 3rd. Most of the final set was wiped away before Flames finally got on the board and pulled the final tally a bit closer with a Mathieu Gosselin marker just under two minutes from time.
Taz Burman faced 35 shots, making 32 saves against Christian Stoever who was 30 for 31.
“That’s a good team who are not only talented,” said Paul Dixon, “but certainly ahead of where we are from a rep standpoint. It’s good to see the level and pace we need to work to and we know we need to be moving in that direction. We were much better in the 3rd so some good signs there, but we want to expand that across a much larger portion of games, obviously.”
“We want to win hockey games, but the process here is more important than anything, and we really have to focus what we are doing or not doing at times to try and be ready when the results count. We get another chance tomorrow at Coventry and we want to be better than we were tonight.”
