Guildford Lions Club’s next fundraising event is an illustrated talk by local historian and writer David Rose, titled Guildford Fun and Entertainment.
It is via Zoom on Friday, evening, January 27, and David will be featuring the wide range of leisure pursuits people enjoyed in times gone by. His talk begins with a peek at the theatres in Guildford from the 19th century and then onwards through to the opening of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in 1965.
There is a nostalgic look at the town’s cinemas, plus venues that held dinner-dances, as well as a thriving post-war youth theatre scene.
Plus, a glimpse of some of the town’s pubs that no longer exist and finishing off with Guildford’s exceptional live music scene in the 1960s featuring the bands and the venues they played at.
To register your interest in attending, send an email to guildfordlionstalk@gmail.com and payment methods, by bank transfer or PayPal will be sent to you by return. You will be sent the Zoom link 24 hours before the talk.

Guildford Lions Club had a busy and successful time fundraising in the run-up to the festive season.
This included: £6,000-plus of supermarket vouchers helping 305 families; £3,500-plus was collected at supermarkets. £800-plus was collected with its Santa’s Sleigh, and to date £4,500-plus has been raised for its Weathering Winter Together campaign.
A home school link worker thanked the club, saying: “I would like to say a huge thank you for the £20 Tesco vouchers and to let you know the 30 that you delivered to Queen Eleanor’s School means we are able to ensure that all our free school meals families receive a voucher this Christmas. This is much appreciated by the school.”
The club is hosting a tea party on Saturday, February 4, at Shalford Village Hall. To attend, email Barry Jutsum at bjutsum@yahoo.co.uk
Forthcoming fundraising events are:
Music in the Park, Sunday, June 11, raising funds to support Sight for Surrey this year with a donation from the money raised on the night made to Guildford’s Talking Newspaper.
Charity Golf Day, Friday, September 1, to raise funds for the Jigsaw School.
