Senior schools in Guildford are reporting excellent A-level results by their sixth-form students.
Students received their results on Thursday morning (August 17).

At Guildford County School 56% of students achieved grades of A* and B, with 31% gaining an A* to A grade. Overall, the school’s students enjoyed a pass rate of over 99%. 85% of all grades were A* to C grades.
Three students holding Oxbridge offers have achieved their places, with more likely to apply post A-level. Nicholas Brown is going to Magdalen College, Oxford, to read PPE after achieving four A* grades and Hannah Coles is going to Worcester College, Oxford after achieving three A* and an A.
This year, a record five students hold a clean sweep of A*s for all of their subjects and eight students hold three or more As or better.
The school says it is particularly proud of several outstanding individual results from students: Joe Taylor (A*A*A*A), Nicholas Brown (A*A*A*A*), Hannah Coles (A*A*A*A), Lucas Joel (A*A*A*A), Isabel Flynn (A*A*A*), Sam Goulden (A*A*A*) and Harry Barham (A*A*A*).
Sam Goulden and Harry Barham were two of five County students who secured a clean sweep of A*’s for all of their subjects.
It is also delighted with the results of the following AS students who achieved four A grades – Dylan Dijk, Oliver Hanlon, Sushant Kc, Joe Lockhart, Sam Lucas, Sofia Mashanovich, Flair Paradine-Callup, Kay Raftery and Tibet Scarlett.
This year saw the school’s highest number of university applications to date with 80% of students achieving places at prestigious universities across the country and 45% to Russell Group universities – including Bristol, UCL, York, Durham, Exeter and Southampton.
Headteacher Jack Mayhew said: “Our warm congratulations to all students and to staff for their outstanding efforts. Knowing the inspiring breadth of many of our students’ achievements beyond the curriculum – in music, sport and charity work – this exam success is a true testament to their sheer energy and determination.”
On its website George Abbot School has reported that 65 A* grades were awarded, which corresponds to 12% of its A2 grades. A further 20% of grades were A grades, resulting in more than one in three grades awarded were A* or A.
57% of results were awarded at the A* to B grade level, while 80% of results were awarded A* to C grades. 31 of students achieved three A grades or better at A-level with with of these achieving four A grades or more at A2 level (excluding general studies and other AS Level results).
The school noted: “This considerable achievement is even more impressive in the context of our comprehensive sixth-form admissions policy and the tougher reformed A-levels. 75% of BTEC entries were awarded distinction or distinction* with Kitty Lewis, Zac Martin, James Nicholls, Chris Rogers, Lisa Smith and Annabelle Stubley all achieved two distinction* grades.”
Two students excelled achieving four A* grades: Louise Li in biology, mathematics, further mathematics, and chemistry; Rachel Sage in mathematics, further mathematics, biology and chemistry. Robert Jin is congratulated on his achievement of five A* grades in economics, physics, mathematics, further mathematics and additional further mathematics.
Two George Abbot students have achieved the grades required to study at Oxford or Cambridge, with a further two students securing places to read medicine or dentistry.
The director of sixth-form studies at George Abbot School, said: “This has been another excellent year. As a comprehensive sixth form our aim is to prepare students for the next stage of their lives. We pride ourselves on the holistic development of our students. These results are just reward for the hard work and dedication with which students have committed themselves to their studies. In a shifting educational landscape, our students and staff have risen to the challenge of the new examinations and we are delighted to celebrate their success.”
The Royal Grammar School achieved another outstanding set of A-level results as, from a cohort of 132 students, more than 77% of the grades were secured at A* or A grade and 71 boys achieved the extraordinary accolade of a clean set of A* and A grades.
In total, 36% of all grades were A*, compared to the national average of approximately 8%. 30 students freceived offers from Cambridge and Oxford universities.
The Headmaster, Dr Jon Cox, said: “Changes to the current A-level system and a move to linear courses have created even greater levels of trepidation among students across the country. However, at the RGS we have always embraced academic rigour and nurtured a love of learning which goes far beyond the confines of the courses, rather than simply preparing students with strategies to pass examinations.
“The new linear courses have allowed our students to immerse themselves in their subjects, pursue areas of interest and study in greater depth and I am delighted that, despite the anxiety in the media, RGS students have again received an exceptional set of A-level results.
At Guildford High School 43.4% of grades awarded were A*, with 97.5% of grades at A* to B. In a year group of 88, 30 students have achieved three or more A*/A grades, with 22 students achieving three or more A* grades.
Headmistress Fiona Boulton said” Our 2017 leavers are an inspirational year group. They are bright, talented and focused, not only academically but in sport, music and drama.
“These outstanding results, the outcome of their effort combined with excellent teaching and support, will allow them to pursue exciting opportunities and we wish them all great success for the future.”
