Guildford’s Walkfest, the annual celebration of walking in and around the borough, is under way and continues throughout September.

There’s a walk for everyone; short or long, walking for wellbeing, or walks that include a stop at a pub.

The Mayor of Guildford, Marsha Moseley, cut a ribbon to launch Guildford Walkfest 2021. Pictured in the pink top is Christine Howard, who chairs the Guildford Walkfest committee.

The month-long celebration was launched with a walk starting at the Swan pub in Ash Vale.

Those attending followed the Basingstoke Canal, crossing the edge of Ash Ranges before heading back along the towpath. Many stayed and enjoyed lunch at the pub after.

The Mayor of Guildford, Marsha Moseley, joined the launch and said: “Walkfest is a great initiative run by the community and we are proud to be sponsors. Thank you to all the walk organisers, guides and sponsors. Without them there would be no Walkfest!”

Christine Howard, who chairs Guildford Walkfest, said: “This year’s theme is ‘Walking for Wellbeing’. There are many benefits to walking, including mental and physical. But walking isn’t just for health, it’s also for pleasure.

“The programme of walks and much of the organisation has been the work of members of the local walking community, all bringing their experience and knowledge of the local area, its history and of course beautiful sights and sounds. We hope to see many Guildford borough residents joining us to celebrate ‘Walking for Wellbeing’ this September.”

There are more than 50 walks across the borough this September, led by experienced members of local clubs and associations.

There are also self-guided walks available. All the walks are free and there are walks to suit all ages and abilities.

Many of the walks are family and dog friendly. Booking is essential and details of every walk are available on the Guildford Walkfest website.
