People who make a huge difference to their communities across the the borough of Guildford have been recognised for their work.

Local historians, community first responders, people from residents associations, museum volunteers and organisations were among more than 40 ‘community stars’ who attended a ceremony on Saturday (April 26). They all received The Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community, which celebrates those who make a real difference by giving their time, many in volunteer roles.

The Mayor, Diana Lockyer-Nibbs, presented the awards at the County Club (sponsors of the award) in Guildford High Street. She said: “All of those receiving awards were nominated by people whose lives have been touched by their kindness, generosity of spirit and endless enthusiasm. I am delighted to recognise the tremendous contribution that they have made within our local community.”

One of those who received an award for his community support role in the Westborough ward of Guildford with the Joining In! project which he co-ordinates is David Rose (also of The Guildford Dragon NEWS and local historian).

He said: “I was honoured to receive this award. The last time I was presented with anything like was was a medal when the school football team I played in won the Guildford and District Cup. I must have been about 13!

“The event on Saturday was a lovely afternoon. Civic secretary Kate Foxton read a citation about each of us before we were presented with our certificates by the mayor. Afterwards, us awards winners and our guests all enjoyed tea and cakes.

“When you attend an event like this, you really do get a feel of what great communities we have around here and what fantastic work so many people are doing – mostly unseen and often with little recognition.

“Hearing about what my fellow award winners are doing, from all parts of the borough, was very interesting. From a local news and media perspective, I wish we could feature them all!

“With my Joining In! role hat on, I have to say I was pleased that three others from the Westborough ward also received awards – Wayne McShane, Gordon Paterson and Wendy Taylor.”

A truly inspiring group of people who it’s great to see honoured in this way.
