Boosting Road Safety with New Feet First Book
Our Safer Travel Team recently visited Boxgrove Primary School in Guildford to deliver Feet First: Walking Training and officially launch our brand-new Feet First Activity Book.
Developed in partnership with Surrey Roadsafe, the activity book has been created to reinforce the vital road safety knowledge pupils gain during their on-road practical training. It provides a valuable take-home resource to help children continue conversations about safe walking with their families and build confidence beyond the school gate.
Surrey Roadsafe, who kindly sponsored the handbook as part of the ongoing partnership supporting Surrey’s Vision Zero goals, attended the launch alongside PC Ollie from Surrey Police. Pupils were able to ask questions and learn more about how everyone plays a role in keeping roads safe.
Lucy Peacock-Smith, Surrey Roadsafe’s Partnership Manager, attended the event and said: ‘Through Feet First: Walking Training, children are learning essential road safety skills that will stay with them for life. As a partnership, we are proud to support this important educational initiative and celebrate its ongoing success in protecting our most vulnerable road users’.
Cllr Jonathan Hulley, Cabinet member for Children, Families and Lifelong Learning, and Cllr Catherine Houston, Liberal Democrat Group Member in Guildford South-East Division, also attended.
They shadowed instructors during a practical session to see first-hand how the training equips children with the awareness and decision-making skills needed to navigate roads safely.
Feet First: Walking Training is delivered to Year 3 pupils (ages 7-8) across Surrey. The programme teaches children how to cross roads safely, identify hazards and make safer choices as pedestrians, while also promoting the wider benefits of active travel.
Since launching, the programme has grown significantly. This academic year, the team is on track to deliver training to 150 schools across Surrey, helping more children develop lifelong road safety skills.
