Keeping Surrey Moving This Winter

Winter has arrived in full force, and recent storms have reminded us how quickly the weather can change. From heavy rains to icy mornings, Surrey’s team of gritter drivers are working around the clock to keep our roads safe and ensure you can get where you need to go.

Our dedicated and resilient gritting team is on call 24/7, equipped with 39 state-of-the-art gritting vehicles to treat Surrey’s busiest roads before and during severe weather. At our four depots across the county, 10,000 tonnes of salt are stored and ready to keep roads safe during icy conditions.

So far this January, our gritters have been out 14 times, including:

  • 10 treatments on Priority 1 (P1) routes – Priority 1 roads are the most important roads in terms of the volume of traffic carried and are the first to be treated in advance of any forecast frost, ice or snow. This covers 1775 miles of our road network.
  • 3 treatments on Priority 2 (P2) routes – These are the second most important routes across our network. During periods of prolonged and persistent frost, ice or snow we carry out gritting on these routes.
  • 1 treatment on high routes – The High Routes are routinely gritted as part of our P1 routes, however we sometimes treat these separately as this area of the county is more prone to frost due to their high altitude.

In total, 3,447 tonnes of salt have been spread to keep Surrey moving during recent cold snaps.

The aftermath of recent storms has made it clear how important it is to keep our network safe. Whether it’s ensuring emergency vehicles can reach those in need, maintaining access to schools, or enabling your daily commute, our priority is keeping roads clear and safe during challenging conditions.

We know how vital clear and safe roads are during storms and cold weather. Whether you’re heading to work, school, or running errands, our team is here to ensure Surrey keeps moving.
