Smarter Traffic Lights, Smoother Journeys

We know how frustrating roadworks can be – especially when they cause unnecessary delays. That’s why we’re always looking at smarter, more flexible ways to keep Surrey moving.

One of the latest innovations we’re trialling is REMOS™ – remotely operated traffic signals. Unlike traditional portable traffic lights, which are often manually controlled on-site, these signals can be adjusted in real time from a central control room.

By having access to live data and camera feeds, operators can monitor traffic queues in all directions and change signal timings instantly in response to traffic conditions. This helps to keep traffic flowing, reduce waiting times, and minimise the impact of utility works – especially in busy or high-risk areas.

There are other big benefits too:

Fewer on-site visits, meaning less disruption for residents

Better air quality, with less engine idling at red lights

Faster responses, thanks to centralised control and coordination

Lower carbon emissions, with one less on-site operative saving over 3,500kg of CO2 per year

This new technology is part of a wider effort to modernise how roadworks are managed in Surrey – from better signage and clearer communication, to smarter tools that help reduce disruption.

We’re excited about the potential of REMOS to make your journeys smoother, safer, and more reliable – and we’ll keep you updated as the trial progresses.

Maybe they should concentrate on the traffic light set up around Dennis’s roundabout, the current sequencing is diabolical and causes massive congestion of only at peak times but throughout the day!

I realise enforcement of the traffic rules in this area is a massive money making operation for SCC but it won’t belong before an accident happens!
