A group of Hong Kongers who recently immigrated and settled here in Guildford were protesting last weekend (June 10 and 11) against the lack of democracy in their home territory, transferred to Chinese rule in 1997
The well-ordered and peaceful protest took place at the rotunda at the bottom of North Street.
A spokesperson told The Dragon: “We sadly left our beloved home because Hong Kong is no longer the place we used to live in. No more freedom of speech nor protesting.
“Three years ago in June 2019, millions of Hong Kong people took on the streets and marched on and on, expressing our objection to the proposed changes of the Extradition Bill and fighting for our freedom in political rights.”
Those protesting complained that in Hong Kong protests are met with brutal police tactics including the use of batons and liberal use of tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and even real bullets against peaceful protesters.
China imposed the National Security Law in Hong Kong in June 2020, which is considered to have seriously violated the Sino-British Joint Declaration and damaged the high degree of autonomy in Hong Kong.
The spokesperson continued: “Many people were being arrested, including journalists, lawmakers, students, members of labour unions and NGOs, from a 12-year-old child to the 90-year-old cardinal, with charges which are nonsensical and against human rights, including but not limited to indecent social media posts and speeches, and once lawful assembly and marching.
“Up to now, over ten thousand people have been arrested and 2,500 of them have been prosecuted.
“We, Hong Kongers, although living abroad now, will never forget the pain deep inside. We will never stop fighting for justice, freedom and democracy.
“That’s why we were holding a rally over the weekend that we believe, with continuous efforts from every Hongkonger around the world, one day our dream will come true.”

The human rights situation in Hong Kong has become worse in the last three years. Thank you to the UK government for issuing BNO visas to qualified Hong Kongers and allowing Hong Kongers to speak and protest freely in the UK.
Please fight for freedom and stand with Hong Kong!
