There’s one last chance to see an iconic military aircraft in the skies over Surrey when it appears at Wings and Wheels at Dunsfold Park in August.

It as has been announced that after this year’s flying season the historic Avro Vulcan XH558 will no longer be flown.

Aviation enthusiast Bob McShee has supplied the pictures here and says: “I recently went to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) entitled Securing the Skie at RAF Fairford.

“This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the show included a mass flypast of wartime vintage aircraft as an evocative reminder of the event 75 years ago.

“The flypast included Spitfires and Hurricanes and featured a ‘dog fight’ between a Spitfire and an ME 109. The flypast was a fitting tribute to ‘The Few’ who saved Britain from Nazi invasion in 1940.

“Another veteran aircraft flying for the first time after many years of painstaking repair was the Bristol Blenheim, which belongs to the Aircraft Restoration Company at IWM Duxford.

“The Blenheim was a light bomber that the RAF flew at the beginning of the war, but its role as a bomber was overtaken by the Lancaster in the later stages of the war.

“As usual at RIAT, the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic team, based at RAF Scampton, put on a spectacular display which this year featured the Avro Vulcan XH558.

“This will be an emotional summer for the crew and support staff of the Vulcan as it has been confirmed that this will be its last flying season. When she lands for the last time this autumn there will no longer be a Vulcan flying anywhere in the world, which is a sad loss.

“However, you will have a last opportunity to see the Vulcan flying at Wings and Wheels which takes place at Dunsfold Park on August 29 and 30.

“Tickets can be bought in advance from the Guildford Tourist Information Centre in the High Street, or at Dunsfold on the day.

“I would strongly suggest that you go and see this iconic aircraft in flight for the last time over Surrey.”
