Rubbish is vanishing along a stretch of the London Road in Merrow because a new club called The Litter Picker Girls has taken on the task of tidying the verges.
And the little ladies have nicknamed themselves. They are Hollie “Muscles” Ellis, who’s nine and the strongest, seven-year-old sister Erin is called “Fearless” because she will pick up anything and friend Issy “Smart” Day, although just eight, always seems to know how to get things done.
The clean-up started after they were playing outside and saw the rubbish strewn on the road verges near their homes. At first, they put up posters on lamp-posts asking people to care for the area. But the posters were soon ripped off.
So they got to work. Already, in the past week, they have picked up and packed two large bags of rubbish over a 100-metre stretch outside their homes.
And they emailed Lib Dem Merrow councillor Steven Lee, asking for litter and dog poo bins to be set up to help them and saying they had applied for the GBC Adopt A Street scheme.
The girls said: “We need more bins because if we don’t then people start to litter more and that could hurt animals. Also, they are not only putting litter on the street but in our gardens as well, in the bushes and behind barbed wire so we can’t reach it to get it out.”
The girls, who attend Bushy Hill and Holy Trinity junior schools, are being supervised by mum Kirsty Ellis. She said: “I’m really proud of them but I make sure they wear gloves.”
Cllr Lee answered their email, congratulating them on “doing a terrific job” and saying he would see what Guildford Borough Council could do.
He added: “I’ve copied the Mayor and Deputy Mayor into this email because I know they love to hear a good news story and I’m sure they’ll feel very proud to have you as residents.”

Maybe some grabbers will make it easier to pick some of the litter that is hard to reach. Keep up the great work Hollie, Erin and Issy!
