The upper High Street was busy as people wandered around the stalls.

In response to: Car Free Day More Often Say Visitors And Shopkeepers

It was a fantastic Car Free Day on Sunday and a big improvement on the first event, last year.

Amazing to see how many people were out enjoying the quiet and the clean air on what would normally be another noisy, smelly day around the town centre – and the traders I spoke to (both stalls and in shops) agreed that footfall and profits were up too.

Pedestrianisation and more car-free days have been shown to improve town centres in all these ways and more across the UK and abroad – there’s no reason Guildford wouldn’t be the same, and I hope the weekend’s success strengthens the calls for an alternative to car dominance in the town centre wherever possible.
