Letter: A Large Majority Would Be Bad for Democracy

In response to: Polls are Polls – Elections are Elections

Labour is certain to win the election whenever it happens but a labour super-majority of 150+ would be bad for democracy as there wouldn’t be an effective opposition to challenge them on anything.

Our voting system is broken and needs to be changed so that people feel that they really have a say but Labour has rejected this, meaning that people have to vote tactically.

The polls indicate that the Conservative parliamentary party will be predominantly made up of those on the right of the party, Braverman, Badenoch et al.

As someone who voted Tory until 2015, my view is that these people should never be near the levers of power again. There is a small chance of a Canada 1993-style wipeout for the Tories which could mean the Lib Dems are the official opposition, but only if we encourage all progressives to vote tactically.

Shouldn’t Labour be excited by the chance of having a progressive opposition instead of watering down their policies to nullify attacks from the right?
