Letter: A Shuttle-Bus Service Could Help Guildford’s Ailing Retail Sector

Guildford shuttle-bus

From Sally Parrot

In response to: Feasibility Work Is Required Before We Can Decide to Reintroduce a Shuttle-Bus

I wonder why every part of every public service has to be “economically viable”?

If a shuttle-bus tempts more shoppers into Guildford and encourages them to spend money in the shops at the top of the town, the whole of Guildford benefits, financially and socially, and the epidemic of closing shops is halted.

Of course, there will always be a small but noisy minority who feel that unless they personally use a service it shouldn’t be free or subsidised (despite using our NHS and roads). However, I’m sure most of us would welcome a service which would help the public and shopkeepers. Perhaps it would even bring more custom to sepulchral Tunsgate Quarter and restore Guildford’s busy, buzzy feel and economic viability.

If, despite being widely advertised, it was little used, it would, naturally, have to be withdrawn but it would persuade me and probably many others to use hilly Guildford over horizontal Horsham and Woking.
