In response to: GBC ‘Already Working with the Defence Ministry to House Afghan Refugees’
For clarification, “Resettle@Guildford” scheme is a private group of concerned individuals who, at their own expense and through their own initiative have linked in with a Home Office-approved scheme to bring vulnerable refugees into this country, over and above the government quota. GBC signed off on it and the Home Office have the final say as to whether we have everything in place to ensure a smooth resettlement for the refugees.
Any group of citizens can be part of this as pointed out by Julia McShane.
Regarding the resettlement of Afghan refugees, I know several Afghan refugees who have settled in Guildford. They are all without exception valuable and peace-loving citizens. Three at least are serving us in the medical field and all their children are excelling at school and university.
Remembering the Kinder transport of not so long ago, how many of these children became pillars of our society, and determined to put something back into the society that welcomed them and saved their lives?

How nice to see someone sticking up for migration for a change! My experience of Afghans is that they are a spirited and delightful people, and those seeking refuge here – having worked closely with the British military, NGOs and other agencies – must be some of the most qualified and talented people their nation could possibly send us.
Being an economically inactive pensioner, I’m thrilled to see my tired, ageing country get such an injection of new blood whose optimism and ambition is likely to rival those of the Ugandan Asians in the 1970s or recent refugees from Hong Kong.

Hopefully some will be lorry drivers who can help get our broken logistics system working again, and our shop shelves full again.
