Letter: Council Leader Writes On Elected Mayor Petition – The Council Has To Follow The Law

Guildford Borough Council Leader (Con, Ash South & Tongham)

In response to several comments sent to The Guildford Dragon NEWS calling on Guildford Borough Council to reject further submissions of the “Elected Mayor Petition” the council leader writes:

Unfortunately (and I mean that in every sense of the word) the council has to follow statute and the law allows for ‘topping up’ by adding to a petition as per the council statement released this week.

It is extremely frustrating that officers from [GBC’s] Democratic Services & Legal [section] are having to commit significant time on administration in relation to this petition – but that is democracy.

I agree the council has been put in an invidious position.

There is no ruling that will not prevent the submission of further attempts, but we must not underestimate the people of Guildford who are more than tired of this charade.

    “That is democracy.”

No, democracy is the elected powers listening to the public, rather than riding roughshod over their wishes, as is happening with the largely unchanged revised Local Plan.
