Letter: First Past the Post Has Advantaged the Lib Dems

Brian Creese

chairman of Guildford Labour

In response to: Some Borough Council Election Statistics

I note two points of interest in the above article. First, although the Liberal Democrats are the party who most favour proportional representation, it seems that they have done rather well by “first past the post” in these elections.

I also note that the only party to take a seat from the Liberal Democrats was Labour.

The message is surely clear, if you want to stop the Liberal Democrat advance, you have to vote Labour in Guildford. We could say: Labour – Winning here!

Maybe Brian Creese could bend the ear of his party leader, Kier Starmer, to get him to commit to having proportional representation (PR) in the Labour manifesto for the next general election.

I and many Lib Dems feel the unfairness of the current electoral system, but until the Labour party commits to changing it they’ll forever facilitate an unfair electoral system.
