Letter: Funding for Pavement Maintenance Will Remain A Significant Issue

From Paul Spooner

Conservative leader of Guildford Borough Council

In response to a comments made by Helena Townsend and others on the article: Pavement Survey In Town Centre Reveals Patchwork Performance.

While highways and pavements alongside public highways are Surrey County Council’s statutory responsibility, Guildford Borough Council has been doing its best with limited resources to improve public realm in the town centre and we will continue to do that whilst funds allow it.

The change from “Local Committee” to “Joint Committee” allowing joint decision making, albeit on significantly reduced Surrey County Council budget provision, should help going forward, but funding is a significant issue for all councils in the foreseeable future.
