Cllr Julia McShane

Lib Dem leader of Waverley Borough Council

In response to: I Stand By My Decision to Join the Conservatives

I thought long and hard about commenting at all as I found the move by Cllr Harwood somewhat of a surprise and my immediate reaction was disappointment, just at the character of his article.

For me, councillors who put their communities above themselves are the ones I value most and it is with that in mind that I would like to say a huge congratulations to my friend and party colleague, Cllr Julia McShane (Westborough), who has been appointed to the position of deputy leader of Guildford Borough Council.

Julia represents the sort of selfless compassion and service to the community that (in my opinion) is at the core of the very best councillors. She has direct experience of many of the issues that impact our communities; issues that impact tenants; issues that affect both of our boroughs, and that just adds to the goodness and sense of this appointment.

I also know that she has never sought this sort of position either and that she has stepped up to this task and to this duty. She should be applauded.

I look forward to working with her in your new role as part of the Guildford and Waverley Borough collaboration to help the residents of both boroughs.

Certainly, she has the best wishes and the support of me and my colleagues of the alliance here in Waverley.
