Letter: More Compromise Needed to Resolve Train Strike

In response to: Does the Train Strike Really Have Public Support?

Whilst I agree that there are more nuances to the rail strikes compared with the NHS workers there are certainly some failings with the train operators.

I understand that at least some of the disruption for SWR this week has been an overtime ban. A company that relies on its staff volunteering to work more than their contracted hours should be more willing to keep their employees happy, if necessary lobbying the government to allow them to do so.

On the other hand, the unions should be more open to contractual Sunday working, so we can have a seven-day public transport network, and driver-only operation when it is safe to do so.
