The Liberal  Democrats are often the “go-to” protest party in Parliamentary by-elections, especially for Labour voters when they know their vote won’t count. That clearly happened in Chesham and Amersham where Labour, the official opposition party, lost its deposit.

Combined with opposition to HS2, that hit the Conservative party hard. But history teaches us that such seats generally return to the Conservatives in a general election when the serious business of choosing a government is at stake and more Conservative voters come out to vote.

Ultimately voters see through the inconsistencies in Lib Dem policy, something they picked up on during the years of the coalition government. You can only get so far saying one thing in one town and something else in another.

I mostly agree with Christian Holliday, but in this instance I think he’s espousing what can only be described as a Bo Peep view of democracy.
