In response to: Opposition Grows to Commercial Use of Burchatt’s Barn

Burchatt’s Barn has not been available for hire since April 2017. So says the council’s Budget Book. Therefore, how can you carry out a proper review of its future in 2017-18 if it was not being marketed?

The residents’ concerns are about the council indulging in commercialising a listed building previously available for community/ recreational use for an extra £4,000 yearly rent.

My written question and answer with Cllr Manning can be found here.

It’s a shame this building has not been available for hire for some time as it is a very attractive venue. I went to a presentation there for “Guildford in Bloom” and thought it the perfect place for a party or small reception.

GSC would have been appropriate tenants for this building. As GBC owns it, the responsibility for its maintenance should rest with GBC. To ask GSC to agree to a tenancy which required them to do repairs is unfair. To make the building into a commercial venture is a waste.

I vote for the Guildford Shakespeare Company to have Burchatt’s Barn. Anyone can visit such as schools. There have been many years when they have performed in dreadful weather, at the University of Law. Keep going GSC.

Having sat through GSC’s brilliant performance of Twelfth Night in the Castle Grounds, in the pouring rain, I have to agree that the company needs a permanent home.

The GBC leadership makes bold claims about supporting the arts, so let’s see them put our money where their mouths are.
