Letter: Thank Heavens for An Irreverent Press

From Michael Bruton

free pressSecretary of the Guildford Greenbelt Group

In a totalitarian state “bias” is when the media is not on the side of those in power.

Thank heavens for an irreverent UK media which probes all groups and individuals in public life.

The political class in the UK have gone from bad to worse in recent years. We now have the Tory party wishing to curtail the Freedom of Information Act. Guildford Borough Council (GBC) already practices obfuscation on that subject.

So when the Telegraph exposes hypocritical MPs over expenses, the Times exposes child abuse, the Guardian exposes phone hacking, Private Eye describes GBC shenanigans – and exposes corruption and abuse of power generally in the UK – and when The Dragon probes where many Guildford councillors might not want it to shed light,  congratulations all round.

I trust that we can look forward to an equally tough probing of the Guildford Greenbelt Group and, where justified, some irreverent comments.

…….and the Government are now hell bent on decimating the BBC which is our only source of independent national news and comment.

‘…excellent local website Guildford Dragon News ..’ Private Eye 30 October 2015, where GBC is first item in Private Eye’s Rotten Boroughs.

Congratulations to The Guildford Dragon News. Many of us would know nothing about the unusual actions of some on Guildford Borough Council were it not for the fearless and impartial reporting of The Dragon.
