Letter: The Council Should Come Clean

Published on: 24 Nov, 2023

From: Philip Brooker

borough councillor for Worplesdon and leader of the Conservative group at GBC

The lack of transparency by Guildford Borough Council in this matter is shocking.

The monthly reports noted above are “internal reports”, not for publication. Further, the significant sums of money noted are for the investigation only and exclude any non-recoverable overpayments or losses incurred through fraudulent activity which could be many times the amounts stated, all to be paid for by the residents of Guildford.

There are many “facts” which the public is entitled to know and that could be disclosed without jeopardy to the ongoing investigations. This council must stop “kicking the can down the road” and come clean with the residents of Guildford.

I note from his letter that the writer is himself a member of the Council he is criticising.

So why not get together with all the other councillors and sort it out together, regardless of the political parties?

Presumably they all want to serve, as best they can, the Guildford residents who elected them all.

The council is run by the Lib Dems, which means that only they have access to information. Their track record of sharing any information has been very poor (the lack of information before the closure of the changing rooms at the Spectrum being the latest of a series of such failures). This causes a lot of frustration for councillors when they find out things from the Dragon or the Surrey Ad rather than proper briefings.

On this specific issue, however, my understanding is that the Lib Dems did originally share confidential information with the councillors, only to see it leaked as a political attack on them. As you say, many councillors do want to serve the people of Guildford. Unfortunately with a general election coming up, there are also many who are only interested in political point scoring.
