Letter: The Guildford and Waverley Council ‘Collaboration’ Should Be Reversed

Published on: 9 May, 2024

Solace report published

From: Peter Martin

leader of the Conservative group at Waverley Borough Council

In response to: Council Leader Apologises Following Publication of Damning Report on GBC

The SOLACE report confirms all our concerns that Guildford Borough Council is at serious risk of failing its statutory duty to deliver best value for its residents.

At the same time Waverley Borough Council and its residents are being drawn ever closer to this failing council by the Liberal Democrat-led administration in a process that they describe as collaboration!

This is wrong, unnecessary and mis-guided. It should be reversed.

Sadly this was always a wrong call, Guildford was not a good match for Waverley.Poor devils like me that live in the villages get no services and what is worse the staff have no understanding of rural existence

I ask Cllr Martin [leader of the Conservative group at Waverley Borough Council] for about the thousandth time – if he thinks the GBC/WBC collaoration should be reversed – will he tell me when he a) can guarantee me a five year settlement from the government with funding security, b) can replace every single pound that collaboration with Guildford saves Waverley and its residents, or c) where he would like several hundred thousand pounds of cuts to services to land?

If he doesn’t have a response to this, I would suggest perhaps that all of his points are deeply reckless, political posturing.

Paul Follows is the Lib Dem leader of Waverley Borough Council
