Letter: The Highway Code Changes Have Made no Difference

In response to: Conflict on the King’s Highway

In my experience, the 2023 changes to the Highway Code has not made a halfpenny’s worth of difference to car drivers’ attitudes to pedestrians and mobility scooter users.

I use the footpaths in a Burpham residential area every day with my wife who has to use a mobility scooter and I have not seen any change in the attitude of car drivers.

I recall one instance where I caused a young driver to have to slow down as he raced round a blind corner towards a junction. He lowered the window and inquired what made me so important that I had to cross the road in front of him?

I ignored him but thought to myself, “What makes him so important that I have to let him pass?”
