Letter: The Weyside Urban Village Project Requires Urgent Attention

Cllr John Rigg making his statement during the online meeting.

From: Christian Holliday

Former Conservative borough councillor

In response to: GBC Project Handling Bungled, Committee told in Shock Outburst

A devastatingly open statement by the lead member for Regeneration, but not a surprise in light of other recent events.

The management issues raised by Cllr Rigg help to explain the poorly thought out proposals presented in the Weyside Urban Village planning application, which was submitted for determination in December and is a current live planning application.

The Weyside scheme has been “in the making” for many years (better known as SARP [Slyfield Area Regeneration Project] for most of that time), yet the planning application has attracted significant and weighty objections and concerns from key stakeholders and partners including Thames Water, Heritage England and Environment Agency, not to mention the Secretary of State’s intervention in the relocation of the allotments, a fundamental element of the proposal.

This is meant to be a flagship scheme on a site allocated for development in the Local Plan, yet some very basic groundwork appears not to have been done, despite many years of work.

Someone at the GBC needs to get a grip of this proposal, urgently.

If any doubt Christian Holliday’s statement they only have to read the documents on the GBC planning website.
