Letter: There Are Other Ways to Improve London Road for Cyclists

In response to: SCC Cabinet Decides to Pull the Plug on London Road Scheme

In August 2020, I expressed my reservations about the Active Travel proposals for London Road due to safety concerns.

As an experienced cyclist, I believe that a more realistic approach to LTN 20 [Cycle Infrastructure Design] could have achieved the desired outcomes.

Specifically, if the drains had been raised to road level, manhole covers treated with non-slip material, and the general road surface made flat to the kerb edge, the full width of the road could be safely used by all road users. This would eliminate the need for cyclists to navigate around obstacles and drivers to change direction to avoid them.

I propose that we resurface our through roads and work together to create a harmonious environment for all road users, rather than one of conflict.
