The petition mentioned in your article raised more that 1,700 signatures against this proposal.

I was present at the hearing last Wednesday. The church commissioners were amazed at the number of unique letters of objection they received – 120 – and wondered how this was achieved.

Simple answer: people (Christian and otherwise) found this proposal unacceptable.

There is no question that St. John’s church provides community service to many groups. The concern is with how they were willing to raise funds for their venture.

Perhaps more consideration should be put into affording it in other ways – lottery funding, buy-a-brick, or internal fund-raising events. Could extending the present building be an option?

Out of interest, was Donna Collinson (who headed up the campaign against this proposal) contacted for her comments by The Guildford Dragon after the commissioner’s decision?

I note that Rev. Woodward gave his view.
