Discussions continue in schools across the country with regard to the future of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, a government-managed defined benefit pension scheme.
There are few independent schools nationally which either have not recently gone, are not currently going, or are not about to go through a consultation process. The governors at the RGS have been engaged in a consultation process with teaching staff about this issue.
As a charity, our responsibility is always to protect our school for future generations and, while attracting inspiring, dynamic staff to the RGS, to also make our education as accessible and affordable as possible for all our parents.
Throughout the consultation process, the governing body has repeatedly stated the value it places on the teaching staff and has worked hard to find a resolution which satisfies all parties; as an employer, however, we fully respect our staff’s legal right to strike.
In the meantime, we are totally committed to doing all we can to keep disruption to an absolute minimum and we continue to work hard to provide as full an educational experience as possible for each of our students.
Those students sitting public examinations have not been, in any way, affected. During the strike days, all students have attended school and followed their normal lesson times in supervised classes, with the majority of lessons taught by their usual subject teachers.
Nurturing a culture of independence and reflection, however, remain at the heart of our educational philosophy and opportunities such as this, with specific, targeted support and guidance, further embed these life-long skills.
