Letter: Where Will Be the Benefits of the Local Government Reorganisation?

Published on: 30 Oct, 2026

From Anthony Mallard

In response to: A Mayor for Surrey? We Should Be Aware of Government Coercion

May I ask if someone can explain to me how two Surrey Councils, a Town Mayor for Guildford and a Strategic Authority Mayor for Surrey (didn’t we have one of those as Leader of Surrey County Council?), with all the hangers on of councillors and administrative support, will be better and more economic than the previous arrangement.

What benefits will these changes bring to Council Tax payers and where was the real-world consultation with residents – not the customary ‘this is what we are going to do, please comment’ – that gave agreement to this expensive change, one which has removed effective local democracy.

I think Anthony Mallard has hit the nail on the head. The more devolved power levels, the more opportunities there are for corruption.
