Local historian and Guildford Dragon NEWS writer David Rose is helping to launch a social group for men in and around the Westborough and Park Barn area, with an afternoon of local nostalgia and vintage photographs.
In his role as co-ordinator of the project Joining In!, that supports community involvement in Westborough and Park Barn, David has been asked to help in the setting up of a group that offers men the chance to get together for a chat and to socialise for an hour or two on a fairly regular basis.
It follows on from the successful men’s breakfast get together that takes place on the first Saturday of the month at St Francis’ Church Hall.
The first meeting of the new group will take place at the hall at St Clare’s Church, Park Barn, next Thursday, June 20, from 2pm to 4pm. It’s all free with refreshments being provided courtesy of the local community safety wardens who work closely on the Joining In! project. Just go along.
David said: “We thought we’d start off by having an afternoon whereby I project on the wall a selection of photos from a few years back – such as the floods of 1968, the old Guildford City Football Club, steam trains, and so on, and have a fun afternoon chatting about those days. I’m usually the one doing the talking, but it will be great to hear some stories and memories of those who come along.”
“If it all goes well, then hopefully the group will develop and other activities can be planned. It will be based on what the guys want to do.”
“Men of all ages are welcome to come along and they don’t have to live in area. And if anyone would like to volunteer to help out with the eventual running of the group, so much the better.”

I attended the first meeting of this new social group for men. I found the afternoon a very enjoyable and interesting, thanks to David Rose.
We all want to meet again next month, and share some of our own collection of photographs. The old school pictures of Northmead Boys School, brought back memories. As David was showing the slides, everyone was welcome to add their own memories about that photo.
