More Faces Of Sixties George Abbot School Pupils To Identify

Published on: 28 Feb, 2016
Updated on: 28 Feb, 2016

The organisers of a reunion of former George Abbot School pupils who attended in the mid-1960s have release more images of those they would like to hear from.

Our previous story noted that the reunion is planned for Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11.

There will be a tour of the school on the Friday from 1.45pm, and on the Saturday there is a get together from 1pm at Guildford Rugby Club at Broadwater.

Familes of those who attended will also be welcome along with any former teachers.

Have a look at the images below, see if you can add any names or perhaps your recognise yourself. Click on the images to enlarge in a new window.

Send details of anyone recognised (and for more information about the get together) to any members of the organising committee whose details are listed on the poster at the foot of this story.

Number 488 on the 1962 photos is me Susan Mason.

I returned to George Abbot in 1978 as head of domestic science.

      Many thanks Sue.

Can you tell me if the school was co-educational when you returned in 1978?

        March 9, 2016 at 4:41 pm

Yes, but not long I seem to remember.

Wilf Rhodes was head of Raynham and Betty Sears was head of Elmslie.

The boys were only in their first year of taking domestic science in the fourth form as an option.

I remember too that photo 489 is Joan Mash.

I have had another look and identified Douglas Antony Moulton-Barratt on page 8, he is No.668.

I will check this out but I may be able to name two of the cooks on page 7.

And I am sure 601 is Stephen Pearne.

Spud Murphy is Terry Murphy. They were both in my class I left in 1961. I think 418 is Mr Greenwood and 418 on the girls photo is Susan Slatter (or Slater).

I was there at that time too and, yes, it was co-ed until 1962 when the girls moved into the newly built Elmslie building. However, it became co-ed again in the 70s but I am not sure of the actual year.

My brother Simon and I attended George Abbot between 1968 and 1972.

E.G.Raynham (nicknamed “The Gut”) was the head and Mr Rose the deputy, who administered all punishments.

I remember Mr Van den Toorn who was so theatrical and kept us all entertained during assembly. There was plenty of tomfoolery going on at this time, despite a very tough disciplinary regime. Maybe I’ll expand on that another time.

Many of the teachers were less popular – namely Mr Crocombe, Mr Cronin and who remembers the eccentric Mr Shinn (PE), whose punishment was to kick a wet leather football at the bare legs of misbehaving boys.

There were some very nice teachers as well – Mr and Mrs Barter (art) who drove identical red sports cars, Miss Marx (French),who often gave me a lift home in her sports car, Mr Norrington (maths and cricket) – he was an Aussie, and not forgetting Mr Wallis (maths).

This period was when skinheads were in vogue, and many of my classmates would be described as such. I remember some as follows: Maurice Greaves Herd, Ross Lovelock and Chris Sandal.

Some of my other classmates included: Garry Wilkes, Bob Slot, Bonar Hayak, Robin Blake, Tony Buckman (aka Peach Blossom until he came back from the Army) and Steve Gee.

This is my fourth posting in two days since I discovered the photo!

I was the leading singer in the school production of Nothing But the High Notes in spring 1965 under John Webber and Mrs Underwood.

I sang in the posh choir where I learned choral singing and kept my voice in shape for the performance. I think Roger Moon and I went to Guildford Park together for my first date.

Sorry I couldn’t get there from America in 2015, but I did take my son back to the school when my former colleague from Winston Churchill School was the head (Stuart R. Davies) – that would have been 20 years ago or so. He is 34 now.

I would like to stay in touch with anyone who remembers me.

I remember Marilyn Bran, Libby Payne, Helen Rowe, Marilyn Bolton, Lois Binder, and am still in touch with Barbara Allen who now lives in Bavaria. I stayed with her a few years ago. Never saw any of the others anywhere.

I am Kathleen Knuckey (nee Welch) in the photo and this is 2020. I was at Pewley and then George Abbot.

I remember Keith Taylor from the pupils and Mr Rose and Mr Rhodes from the teachers.

I had a wonderful English teacher but I cannot be sure of her name. I went on to be a French teacher.

708 was Pamela can’t recall her surname.

    She studied classics at Durham

I can confirm that, as suggested by earlier correspondents, pupil 601 is Stephen Pearne, and 253 is Brian Rich.

So many familiar faces but names are elusive. I confirm my identity as No. 428 – Roger Newland.

I am looking for a girl from George Abbot School from 1962.

We met on a school trip to Guernsey in 1962 and remained pen pals for while, then lost touch.

I know it’s a long shot after so long. I’ve seen the photos of pupils here and she is on one of the photos, Page 5. Number 419.

    She was called Jennifer Adams.

I would be grateful if anyone knows where she is now.

I am Morag Hawkes, number 720 in the girls school photo. I have lived in Sweden now for 53 years so it might be difficult to come to the next reunion.

I am number 204 on the 1960 school photo page 2. I remember Richard Morley, Kevin Reed, and my best buddy Ray Wisden who ended up in the SAS and took his own life one bad day. Love you Ray my guy!

I think 540 on page 6 is me – Sandra Tompkins as I was then – but I can’t be 100 per cent sure. I started at George Abbot in 1962 and left in 1968. It would be interesting to get any updates on further reunions – I’d love to attend if I can. Although I live near Cambridge now my sisters still live in Guildford.

Does anyone remember when Prince Philip came to visit the school? I have a vague recollection of his helicopter landing on the school field but nothing else.
