All are welcome to attend illustrated talks given by the Modern History Group, taking place at The Guildford Institute in Ward Street.
On Tuesday, October 30, at 2.30pm, David Stokes will speak about the emergence of Anglo Saxon Kingdoms circa 600 AD in a talk entitled ‘Warlords and Peace Weavers’.
The talk will examine a crucial time when the British kings of the ‘Old North’ had a chance to turn the tide. What happened paved the way for the foundation of our modern state.
On Tuesday, November 30, Trevor Brook will talk to the group about Sudeten Czech Refugees in Surrey.
Hundreds fled after the 1938 Munich Agreement allowed Germany to take over Sudetenland. They camped in bell tents, set about constructing chalets, running a school and contributing to the war effort.
Photographs and diaries show where they lived and what life was like for the exiled men, women and children.
Entrance £3 (Guildford Institute members £1.50).
