Come to the Guildford Twinning Association’s annual mini German Christmas market – we will give you a good time while we raise funds and our profile.

There is free admission to this beautiful and historic venue, where you can buy traditional German Christmas bakery, German-style wooden toys, gifts, stocking fillers, books – and also taste our Glühwein (mulled wine) and win a prize on the tombola.

During the market, at 2pm, the Mayor of Guildford will be awarding the prizes in our Short Film Competition for Schools.  For the second year running, students in all Guildford secondary schools were invited to compete in teams of up to three in making a two-minute film in German, topic “Mein perfektes Wochenende” (my perfect weekend).

Guildford’s Guildhall where the market will be held.

For full details of the brief and our eminent judges, see Guildford schools film comp 2022.  Last year 25 children took part, this year 38 – some of them back for another attempt.

This year, the GTA is running a similar competition in Guildford’s twin town Freiburg in south-west Germany, where the film has to be in English, topic of course, ”My perfect weekend”.  The prizes will be awarded by the Oberbürgermeister in Freiburg’s historic medieval Gerichtslaube.

Maybe, in a year or two we’ll manage a variation on the competition, with mixed teams comprising students from schools in both towns – achieving the GTA’s aim of international co-operation, combining it with our current drive towards involving young people. The more friends we all have, the better, and the younger we start, the even better.

The Guildford Twinning Association is a voluntary organisation, supporting the formal twinning of Guildford and Freiburg and promoting social, sporting, cultural, business, tourism and educational contacts and exchanges – in short, co-operation and friendship.
