Professor Michael Jacobs of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute will give a talk on “Rethinking Capitalism” at the University of Surrey on Monday, October 14.
Promoted by the Surrey Fabian Society and the South West Surrey Compass Group, the meeting will take place at 7.30pm in the Lecture Hall 1 in the Austin Pearce Building.
Professor Jacobs will address the twin themes of the reasons for the current crisis in capitalism and the way in which economic thinking needs to change to inform policy more effectively.
A former General Secretary of the Fabian Society, he was special adviser to Gordon Brown, first when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, then as prime minister No.10 Downing Street.
He was also responsible for the development and co-ordination of the government’s strategy on climate change, energy and environmental policy and is the author of a number of books on environmental economics and progressive politics, most recently co-editing a collection of radical proposals under the title of “Rethinking Capitalism”.
The meeting is open to all and free of charge, although voluntary contributions are welcomed.
