Notice: Stoke Park Bowls Club Selling Off Surplus Items To Raise Funds

Stoke Park Bowling Club is holding a fundraising sale from 10am on Saturday, April 22.

There will be a number of items of bowling equipment and clubhouse furniture for sale, together with crockery and glassware which might be useful to other clubs and organisations. The sale is taking place at the club in Stoke Park.

The club is fundraising to update its Stoke Park clubhouse in order to establish a club to provide bowling “for people of all ages and gender, and to include facilities for the disabled”.

Stoke Park Bowling Club is the result of a recent merger between the Astolat Bowling Club and Guildford Bowling Club, and is the result of Guildford Borough Council’s decision to maintain just one bowling green in Stoke Park, which could have resulted in the closure of both clubs and threatened the future of bowling in the park.

Bowls has been played in Guildford in Stoke Park since 1942, when Guildford Bowling Club established its home ground on a vacant croquet lawn in a wooded copse known as Peacock Wood.

Both clubs have a long history, with the Astolat club due to celebrate its 50th anniversary, having originally been formed by members from Guildford companies such as the Friary Brewery and Dennis Brothers. The Guildford Bowling Club was established in 1885. The merger has resulted in a new club with 60 playing members and 30 members who participate in social activities. The club hopes to attract new members by upgrading their facilities.

Stoke Park Bowling Club is in Lido Road, GU1 1HB. For more information about the club, visit www.bowlsguildford.com.
