An underpass beneath a busy road in Park Barn that was rarely used as it was often flooded has had work finally done to make it accessible.
The repair work was triggered during a walkabout by the Stoke & Westborough Action Group team. On the day the walk took place late last year the weather was awful and the underpass was deep in water. It was clear to those who witnessed it that the drainage had failed.
Fiona White, Lib Dem Surrey county councillor for Guildford West, takes up the story: “Each county councillor has some Community Pride money which they can allocate for highways related work.
“As I had some money available, I asked the highways officers to meet me on site to discuss the problem and what could be done about it. They concluded that there were a number of problems. The main one was that the drain was obviously blocked although there were also issues with the slope of the surface to get the water to the drain and rubbish accumulating.
“They devised a scheme to investigate the problem and repair the drainage system. At the same time they resurfaced the underpass to make the surface safer and to create a slope into the drain.
“Obviously, I am delighted that local residents and the children from Guildford Grove School now have a safe means of getting to the other side of Egerton Road without having to dodge the traffic.”
Guildford borough councillor for the Westborough ward, Julia McShane (Lib Dem), added: “We will now be trying to get the underpass thoroughly cleaned to make it even better for those using it to safely cross Egerton Road.”

Oh dear this underpass has been brought to the attention of officials.
I believe it is the custom of the county to close all underpasses in Guildford..especially if people actually use them…..
Anyone know the excuse they are using to close this one?
[Ed: I have been told that as this underpass is technically under a bridge and is not a ‘tunnel’ under the ground as such, there should not be any plans to close it.]

In today’s news we hear Boris Johnson is asking TfL to look at several tunnel options under London’s roads but I can see no chance of having such tunnels in Guildford area to deal with congestion here so long as the subway filler-uppers and tunnel haters in the councils continue with their irrational policy.
