Do you have any memories of seeing rock band Status Quo play at the Wooden Bridge pub in Guildford at the end of the 1960s? Or did you see them in the 1970s when they played at Guildford Civic Hall?
Andy Flemmings is researching the touring history of this famous British band and contacted The Guildford Dragon NEWS to see if we could help.
He says that he thinks the band played at the Wooden Bridge probably in the late 1960s or early 1970s when they were gigging at lots of pubs and other small venues.
Andy adds that Quo played Guildford Civic Hall on May 14, 1972, when they shared the bill with Slade. He has a a cutting from the New Musical Express reviewing this show – what a gig that must have been!
Quo returned to the Civic Hall on March 29, 1973. Did anyone see that gig?
In corresponding with Andy, I mentioned to him that I have heard that Quo guitarist and singer Rick Parfitt (born and raised in Woking) guested with the Jackie Lynton Band at the Wooden Bridge in the late 1970s – either at Christmas time or new year and possibly on more than one occasion.
The story goes that Rick joined that band on stage for a few songs at a festive party-type gig. Jackie Lynton, who still plays lots of small venues in the area, and Rick have been mates for years. There is even a picture of them together way back when on the Jackie Lynton Band’s website. Click here to view.
I think they did some songwriting together at one stage.

The Rolling Stones played there as well as the Bay City Rollers.
The Stones played there in the early 1960s. Might have been 1963 or 1964. I saw the Rolling Stones.
[David Rose adds: I think the Stones first appearance at the Wooden Bridge was in 1963. Details can be found in the book Guildford The Rock ‘n’ Roll Years, by Nigel Enever. It charts live music in Guildford from the later 1950s through the 1960s.]
