Records were broken at Guildford schools on Thursday this week (August 25) with the announcement of GCSE exam results.
Nationally, the proportion of 16-year-olds getting A*s and As was down 0.6 percentage points, with the A*-C pass rate dropping by 1.3 percentage points.
However, Guildford’s Royal Grammar School had a record-breaking year, surpassing its all-time record results, with 96.3% of the grades secured at A* or A.
79.4% of all grades were at A*, while 43 boys achieved straight A* grades in their 10 or more subjects. In total 118 boys secured straight A* / A grades across all their subjects.
Headmaster Dr Jon Cox said: “The consistent standards of excellence across all our boys is a source of genuine pleasure: all the more so as, in addition to their academic work, they immerse themselves so enthusiastically into all aspects of school life.
“The fact that the vast majority of the whole year group achieved straight A* and A grades – and in traditional, robust academic subjects – highlights that despite the media noting the disparity between the genders in take-up and performance in arts and science subjects, our boys perform to the very highest standards in each of their academic disciplines.
“The work ethic and mutually supportive atmosphere in this year group, reinforced by the phenomenal dedication of the staff, has provided each boy with the opportunity to have the most ambitious aspirations as they enter the Sixth Form. I am very proud of all our boys.”
At Guildford County School 78% of students achieved the new English and maths progress measure, with 34% achieving the EBacc threshold.
Headteacher Jack Mayhew said: “We are pleased that 83% of our students gained five or more A*-C grades, with 76% gaining five or more GCSEs at A*-C grades including English and maths, a 6 and 5 percentage point increase on last year’s results respectively.
“This year also saw 35% of all grades awarded were A* or A grade, 61% A*-B, with an overall pass rate of 99%. Our attainment 8 score currently reads at 5.89, the highest in the school’s history, making the average grade awarded a B grade.
“Once again, being with our students in the sixth-form common room today collecting their results is a privilege. The students’ smiles express their delight at their well-deserved achievement and it is great to see them securely making the next step in their lives.
“I would like to congratulate both students and staff alike for their tremendous efforts in achieving these results. We look forward to welcoming back the students into the sixth form in September.”
At St Peter’s Catholic School the overall pass rate was 100%, with 95% of pupils gaining A* to C grades. The percentage of grades that were A to A* was 46%.
Headteacher Toby Miller said: “The hard work and dedication of both students and staff paid off as everyone celebrated really excellent results.
“We are delighted that 84% of students gained five GCSEs including maths and English and 45% of all entries were A* or A. This is a fantastic outcome and will open many doors for their future education.
“This year group were a particularly hard working. The grades they have achieved are proof to future years that excellent attendance, hard work and strong parental support really do pay off.”
Nearly a third of St Peter’s 177 Year 11 students got eight or more A* or A grades.
At Guildford High School 77% of GCSEs awarded were A* grades, with 96% being A* or A. In a year group of 101 girls, 80 girls achieved straight A*/As and 100% of grades achieved were A*-C. 47 girls achieved 9 or more A* grades.
Headmistress Fiona Boulton said: “We are delighted. The consistency of our very strong results reflects both the hard work of our pupils and our exceptional teaching staff. We hope all our pupils enjoy the end of their summer holiday and look forward to seeing them, and welcoming our new sixth-form students, in September.”
At Tormead School Year 11 pupils had much to live up to as last year’s GCSE results were close to record breaking. This year nearly 50% of all grades awarded were A*, more than 80% A*/A and 97% A*-B, meaning the girls outscored last year’s cohort.
A spokesperson from the school said: “As ever, the girls had remarkable support for the staff: it was a real team effort with 11 departments gaining 100% A* – B grades and eight of them achieving 85% or more A*/A.”
