From A Windebank
In response to: Guildford High Street, Then and Now – Nothing Can Stop Evolution
The closure of House of Fraser on Guildford High Street was the last straw.
A thriving, quality department store is the mark of an equally thriving town, and a haven if you want a variety of shopping choices.
The only other way to seek choice is online now, which makes me furious, as I much prefer to shop.
Whatever happened to the initial interest from Fenwick?
Their deparment store in Kingston is glorious; the House of Fraser building is ripe for a make-over and would, I suspect, prove a lucrative move for them. I would definitely be tempted back into town if they took it over.
Failing that, tax Canada Life until their pips squeak, for leaving a derelict listed building to rot.
Editor’s comment: We understand that Fenwick and Canada Life could not agree terms. There have been efforts by councillors to facilitate a new tenancy but we have heard no positive news to date.

Who cares anymore? This bird had flown and Guildford just continues to be a gridlocked, stinking dump best avoided. Can’t imagine why anyone would want to battle the traffic and get ripped off for parking to shop there – and for what?
Decades of appalling governance and mismanagement have done for it, and it’s not going to get any better for decades, if ever.
